This is my blog, which mainly focuses on the development of Data Tree but also includes posts on developing with RunRev and other thoughts and stories as they spring to mind.

Not a lot of blog, web or indeed Rev activity of late due to getting married and work getting very busy indeed.

What has surprised me recently is how little traffic there has been this week on my way to work. I have a long journey and routinely come across traffic jams and, worse still, accidents (or incidents as the traffic boards often refer to them as). However, this last week, there was been far fewer cars and lorries on the motorways. It's not the school holidays or anything, so I can only assume that it's the impact of the recession and the loss of jobs in the economy.

Bet that now I've written this, it'll be back to chaos again tomorrow!

Spent a little bit of time moving things around on this site... and then putting them back. And then moving things around again!

I guess the question I've been trying to answer is "should the blog be on the front page?".

Hmmm…

I other news, I came across a new(ish) RunRev blog today…

I've been thinking about a reporting engine that builds up a report from many possible pieces of information in a database. There's a fair bit of calculating to be carried out and for each piece of information, the data to be added to the report is different and so each needs to be evaluated.

The chances are that this report building is going to take about ten or twenty seconds to complete. Maybe more if accessing the database takes time.

So I'd like my progress window to be interactive and include a cancel button. It would also be nice if the user could expand the window to see what part of the report was being built. Problem is, Rev executes code in a linear fashion and isn't really set up for threading events.

Or is it? To read my musings on the matter, click on the Read More button below.

Rather excitingly, I offered my article on document centric applications to the RevUp Newsletter and it was published!

Actually, whilst I'm blogging about differences between the Mac and Windows, I thought I'd comment on some things that annoy me with list views on Windows, especially Vista.

As I'm developing on the Mac, I've relied at lot upon the Windows UI Guidelines and have used this page an awful lot. Blimey, is this uneccesarily complicated or what?

It's no wonder that people say the Mac's interface is better than Windows'. Not wanting to flame any arguments (not that anybody reads this blog anyway) but when you look at different platforms and see how the same problems have been solved, I usually find that Apple has taken the more difficult but more intuitive approach.

The Christmas break has given me some time to carry on working with my list view control, and it has come on in leaps and bounds.

The aim of the control is to provide Rev developers with fairly easy means of implementing a comprehensive list view in their applications. As Rev is multi-platform, I've built the control around three looks: Mac OS X, Windows XP and Windows Vista.

Here's an example of the Mac look, complete with the control builder I've been, erm, building. More (larger) examples and details of the features implemented when you click on Read More below.

You can start a website, blog and all that and have the best desires to do something with it. So after a break of a few months, I've finally got some time to get going again.

I've uploaded my first library for juicy UI in Rev: Mac OS X Textured Button.

Originally when I put it together, there was something that just wasn't right about it. Scratching my head with snapshots of my button and one from Interface Builder, blown up side by side, I saw that the Mac now gently places a shadow under text on metal windows.
